Really shit moderation teams existed well before Reddit and was arguably much worse back then. It's not like you could just join another Facebook group or another Subreddit, you had to find an entirely new site to join and make new friends completely from scratch. A lot of people like myself have nostalgia for such sites from the mid 2000s because the internet was still fresh and new. It was admittedly pretty cool to have hyper specialized communities where you could interact with an entirely new set of people depending on where your interests took you. Something that was really cool was running into someone you knew on another forum going by the same screen name.
What really sucks about the modern internet is just how fucking lame most modern social media is now and how nothing is self contained anymore. Your reputation proceeds you wherever you go.
