What one thinks of when they think “France” is the Parisian mono-culture.
Old France was truely different.
However by the time of William the Normans did speak I dialect of Frankish rather than a Nordic language.

It WAS conquered by Normans, wether Normans are French is largely irrelevant. If you do count them as French, William was still a Chad.
