/bant/ would have fulfilled two purposes: to serve as /b/+/int/-porn, and take threads from other boards that didn't fit there or anywhere else but were interesting enough not to delete. They could have instead used /trash/ for that but they would have upset and partially uprooted the proverbial rat's nest there. In my opinion, /bant/ was made for valid reasons but the urgency of those reasons were honestly insignificant to have a board partly dedicated to it; most anons just wanted to have obnoxious shitposting cut down iirc.
The main issue was that moderation wasn't willing or able to enforce that, so /bant/ quickly degenerated into a destructive free for all between the groups that tried to stake a claim for the board. Heck a mod even helped stoke it by giving a certain group special treatment at the expense of everyone else, but I guess it was somehow alright because almost everyone on /bant/ except the designated punching bags got along at the time.
It's all just so tiresome...
