Basically everything is a sin, so you're expected to live by commiting as few as possible and helping others, while remaining humble. It's the same in Buddhism, with the wheel of samsara - the only way to escape the ever turning wheel of 'sins' is thru self-control. This is, I believe, the whole picture you refer to. When you're living life, it's hard to break free from your repeated actions, even when you know they're causing problems. It's hard to take a step back and evaluate, but we'd all be better off for it.
