I think you are having a hard time understanding my point. Some people walk a different path, not better or worse just different. I don't think there is anything wrong with people striving for great things in life, I think that's what life is about, it's just that I don't have a typical conception of what is "great". To me a great life is a free one. Striving for career and stress and materialism does not sound free to me, it sounds like servitude.
