In small towns people stick to themselves, drinking, wife-beating and committing incest indoors. Seriously, NZ has among the highest rates of alcoholism and incest because there is nothing else to do
Takes ages to get anywhere decent. Australia is a welcome respite from the backwater of NZ but takes four hours to get to minimum. Anywhere else is a whole day's flight. You feel trapped in a redneck two-horse town
Very insular media. Their foreign news coverage is usually limited to "here's what this foreign country's celebrity said about NZ today". As a result most kiwis know nothing about the world outside
