We are called to be perfect, yet we are not perfect. We fall short of His standard. Yet, if we do good works, we are only doing what we should have done in the first place - by doing good works we are not "exceeding" what we are called to do, but only "matching" the standard (that's assuming that we do match His standard, which we do not).
So how are we going to make up for our sin? We are in debt, and so God became man so that God could be reconciled with man, so that he could live a perfect life, and die a perfect death, that man might be justified. He secured your salvation, and if you believe in Him and devote your life to Him, you will be saved from the wrath.
