it's basically just that a lot of indie artists sing with the same really weird accent that doesn't occur anywhere naturally. the main thing they do is turn everything into diphthongs for some reason. if you're interested here's a video of someone explaining its variations from a regular midwestern american accent timestamped at her doing an exaggerated version

i remember seeing a video about why the accent developed in the first place but i'd have to go find and watch it again before i felt comfortable summarizing it because it's been a while
