You've already been trying hard for this long, don't stop now, of course. Life isn't all work, and to be honest, I think it's better that you spent your time building relationships rather than possibly withering yourself away with work, even if you got somewhere with it. I think you can always manage to keep yourself afloat where you are, as long as you're not insanely lazy, but having long lasting relationships with people you like is way harder to get, not something you can find around the corner.
So, I don't think you should feel very bad about how things came out, you can still be grateful for things. Just focus on what you've gotta do now.
