Larian is a good at making CRPGs that are mechanically pleasing to the average normie. This is their highest budget production: a AAA RPG at a time where fantasy is popular. The writing is shit, but it panders to ideas that unfortunately hold a lot of social clout.
It was bound to be a critical and commercial success. Unlike similarly woke games, it is a solid product. Being woke can't ruin a decent game nor improve a bad game. In the short term at least.
The long term is a different story.
After Original Sin 2, Larian was untouchable and loved by both core fans and normies. You'd be delusional not to think they've lost a huge chunk of their core audience with BG3. Discussion about Larian games went from 90% positive aside from occasional flame wars with Pathfinder/Pillars fans, to being 50/50.
And the normies can't be counted on to keep buying future games. The excesses of BG3, I think, will age like milk and will be laughed at in a few years the same way people mock cheesy 80s action films.
