not really true depending on the breed and health of the bird, a larger and more active bird is basically a small toddler in the way they like to interact with their family members and spend time with you
smaller birds do this too to varying degrees, they arent capable of quite as much as a big parrot or something but birds like cockatiels are very social and enjoy company. my family has had many and even if they were disabled or just avoidant of people they still liked being around others and involving themselves in things
it is very much a personal preference type of thing though, its a simpler type of companionship with a lot of responsibility and dedication attached and i fully understand not wanting to put up with it just for something that doesnt completely understand the relationship the way a person would. people with pets generally just like the routine of taking care of something while having a rudimentary level of mutual trust with something that has unique behaviors humans wouldnt have
