E-book readers are something that I consider to be completely essential. Even those with more closed operating systems like the Kindle don't take any measures (as far as I've noticed) to prevent piracy, so you buy an ebook reader and have in your hands basically the whole library of the world for free.
I have been using Libgen + Kindle + Calibre (software to manage the books and send them directly to Kindle) for years and have read several hundred books without spending anything. My Kindle is offline 100% of the time.
I was quite resistant to the idea initially because I could read on my computer, but e-book readers are far superior because of portability, battery that lasts several weeks, e-ink, etc.
