All across the world major cities are limiting car use through stealth taxes / fees or outright banning cars in some cases. They cite concerns over pollution and excessive traffic as the reason, and those are problems for sure, however the real reason is much more insidious.
In the future you won't be able to drive somewhere in your own car. You will have a self driving car, likely with something similar to a mortgage on it (so you don't own it), with a list of preset government approved destinations that you can program it to drive you to. If you wish to be driven in your car to somewhere not work or school related then you will need written permission from the local authorities and provide them with justification for your travel plans, likely weeks in advance.
In the end, you will need to be a corporate elite or a card carrying member of the local jurisdiction to actually drive your own car. Everyone else will be effectively imprisoned inside major urban centers, their lives forcibly made to revolve around work and occasionally going to the bar.
