I've read quite a few books by and interviews with prominent Communist historical figures, Soviet primary source texts from things like the (rather biased) encyclopedias they printed, and other secondhand analyses of applications of Communism - some even being more conservative and critical analyses of states like the USSR (for example, one book which gives a conservative evaluation of the Soviet Union while still being relatively good is The Soviet Tragedy by Martin Malia, an author who also contributed to the infamous and very biased Black Book of Communism).
I consider myself a bit of an expert on the Soviet Union...
