if you haven't yet taken a japanese class at the university but have prior knowledge then you can take a placement test to skip the early classes and start at whatever level you're on. this also gives an extra level of retarded to the whole situation in my opinion since someone could read genki alone in their room for 5 months before enrolling and start in japanese 3, but if i take a class concurrent with the first 3 months of reading genki alone in my room then somehow i can't be at the same level as that hypothetical person
