It is about ego rejecting anima and becoming split into ego/shadow. The ego is Gaston and the shadow is the Beast. The psyche cannot be complete i.e., form a quaternity unless the horizontal human axis (ego-shadow) and the vertical transpersonal axis (Self-anima) are in unison. This is an ideal state because the psyche is whole and everything is slightly numinous.
