Most tide-charts have the moon printed on them, and anyone who's lived near the ocean knows you can use the moon to predict the tides. During a New and Full moon, the tides swing more widely. During half moons, the tides are small.
That's because when the sun and moon are in alignment, their tidal forces are adding together. When they are off kilter, they are subtracting each other.
