If you don't have a garden you can always plant shit in window pots or under lights. In the UK you can rent an allotment which is a plot of arible garden space dedicated in large numbers for people to grow their own stuff, my allotment is large enough to produce hundreds of kilos of potatoes and fruit and costs £16 a year in rent!
Also, remember to eat what grows around you. Forage the wild growing foods and hunting/trap/fish the edible abundant species. Squirrel is king as it's invasive, fast breeding and destructive but are easy to kill even with a low power air rifle.
