Essentially, we don't want to admit that the people we dislike are very much humans doing human things, so we invent some magical fairy that makes them do the "horrible" things
This allows us to feel more comfortable as a human (because only "demon-possessed" people act like that, right?) while also giving us a chance to go all out in our hatred against the "wrong-doers" because our brains are literally programed not to do harm to people we deem as equal
Maybe seeing these problems as human problems with human solutions is the way we move forward?
