Some of the present Mexican-American neighborhoods in Los Angeles were originally areas inhabited by Californios going back to the 1800s. Santa Monica, San Gabriel valley, Pasadena and North East Los Angeles (areas called Eagle Rock and Highland park) had sizeable Califonio communities but pretty much all of them were taken over by subsequent Mexican waves of migration. The San Gabriel valley area and coastal parts of California all the way from Ventura county up to Santa Cruz and a few inland areas like Napa had a lot of us too. We're actually not that uncommon at all all, it's just that more recent Mexican migrants outnumber us like 20 to 1. I know other people who are Californios with family going back to when this was still Mexico/Spain. It's just that since we were the original Hispanics here others simply moved to where we were and outnumbered us.
Californios and really Mexican Americans in general in California self segregated until around the World War 2 era. We still interacted and worked with Anglos and everything but mostly had our own communities and didn't marry them often. We did intermix with Catholic whites though. Most commonly Italians and Irish some Poles and German Catholics too, but most Germans out west were protestants and there aren't many Poles. Way back in the 1800s we segregated almost as a classist thingbut then Anglos caught up and surpassed us by the 1880s and then we pretty muc just stayed separate due to religion. My grandparents tell me there actually wasn't that much animosity between the Californios and Whites because both had their own parallel symbiotic communities until the 1930s. Then Whites from eastern states started flowing in and brought all their weird racial shit with them. That's when you started actually seeing fights. My great grandmother unironically referred to them as Oakies and "white niggers".
