yeah, what i've heard repeatedly is that N3 is an absolute must have for working in a japanese office and many jobs require N2 if they're picky or the position requires a lot of communication, though N1 is basically just for flexing unless you plan to work as a simultaneous translator or something
recently my mom asked if i had a backup plan in case the JET program rejects me and honestly i hadn't considered the possibility that they could. i still think my chances are like 85% or more, but having N3 fresh out of college seems like it would make me borderline unrejectable. i'd still probably pursue N2 while in japan, but it'd be nice to know that it isn't absolutely essential that i take and pass the test while i'm already working full time
