The cold sores on a lip are no different than the ones on a dick.
Some people never show symptoms, ever. Their body just contains and fights it off. Other people get symptoms once in their entire life and it never comes back. Some people get symptoms often continuously and some people have severe symptoms.
It's the same with HIV and Mononucleosis which are both in the same family of virus.
Some people get Mononucleosis and show no symptoms, others have severe recurring symptoms... There are people who get HIV and their body just fights it off like a common cold, some people get a weakened immune system but not enough to ever cause and issue and some people die from it.
Just like the common flu sometimes kills people, usually people with immune system issues.
