It's possible Baphomet somehow related to Mahomet (how they used to write Muhammad) and the Templars were connected with Islam or the name is tied to Sophia as the Atbash Cipher says (Sophia is the gnostic goddess). Maybe it's a combination of the two or something else entirely. The symbol is so imposing and enigmatic that people love to speculate.
