>>11999326i was and am but it's to pretty mixed results. for me it's not bad at forcing me to confront words that i don't know, but it doesn't really help to actually learn them. time and time again i find the only way to do that for words i don't just "get" is to have a real situation in which i actually use it.
the monologuing for example tends to come in the form of trying to go out of my way to voice my thoughts in japanese rather than just letting it stay in the realm of abstract concepts in my mind. usually i can push my thoughts in a certain direction and it'll all be fine, but it's hard to remember the word for "to turn on" when there's just not a lot of thoughts i have that involve turning things on.
of course i can go out of my way to think about all the different things that i might turn on over the course of a day, but that breaks the point of "natural context" and doesn't actually help me to remember it much more than staring intently at a flash card
