Islam would not have spread if not for the Arabs in Arabia invading their neighbours so easily.
Simply put, they could not expand and grow outside their borders because their resources were limited due to their desert/climate.
As such, they became territories for Greece under Alexander the Great and later falling to Rome afterwards. Following the fall of Rome, they were extremely weakened to a point where the Arabs so famously took over Egypt and the Levant, which at the time were under Byzantine rule.
