If you get a quote to do your brakes for "X" amount, instead of paying someone else - spend the same amount on tools and watch a Youtube video. Over time you will accumulate the tools & knowledge to do it all yourself. Buy a beater to work on obviously.
Yes though, cars are fucking expensive no matter what you buy. Don't give a shit what other people think. If you talk to actual mechanics/car guys they don't really give a fuck what you drive and probably drive pieces of shits them self.
Just change your fluids on time (transmission fluid/gear oil etc included!), never buy new. Rebuild status vehicles aren't too bad if you use them for work.
Honestly, the freedom of owning a vehicle is well worth it though.
I'd rather live in my car than not own one as I use it for work.
