Mine are usually vivid and realistic (as in I feel that this is really happening) and abstract (but for some reason I don't find the abstractness weird in the dream). I can also remember past dreams in the dream but not anything from real life.
Dreams are considered to be reflections of the subconscious, such as desires and fears you normally repress (or want to) during the time you are awake. And because of that mental strain they often emerge at night. Yours are probably influenced by drug consumption.
My nightmares are rare, but they often feature drowning.
