looking back on it, blizzard was extremely predatory on character customization. you couldn't get any of the nice looking gear without buying the expansions straight out the gate. otherwise you would completely fall behind without getting anything that was both powerful and aesthetically pleasing. i picked up the burning crusade on release day and it still took me over a month to get illidan's blades
