So long as the genuinity stops, starts your so called "attention whoring" - at least in my opinion.
Difference between friendship and attention seeking is the amount of symbiosis in between of you. If your so called friend exists to you only when you need him or something from that person, that's definitely a good red flag. If dialogues are mainly monologues meant to be heard by your friend to produce a somewhat meaningful string of encouraging words or advice, as if you are inputting your woes into a machine, that's definitely a red flag as well.
Unless you have a personality that is more for the people, rather than driven by them, your ego will always be placed in before others, making you a successful attention whore.
