If you accept the moon landings are real. Then you accept that achievements in space travel aren't necessarily progressing. That there's a definite possibility that the technology and achievements could go backwards. There are a lot of Americans that basically take it as an article of faith that one day we're going to colonize the Stars. The moon landing being the high point of human space travel doesn't sit well with them. It's easier to say the landing was fake then to admit that there is there's a possibility we'll never get to the stars and we're all going to die on this rock.
