Of course, if you want to teach someone something new and you laugh at him fro being incompetent, he doesn't wanna take any effort into that. That's normal, why would he? But that's not the case here. He did something stupid, that he didn't think was stupid. It wasn't caused by his incompetency, but by lakc of knowledge. By laughing at him he will better remember that the thing was dumb and won't do that ever again (or at least, that's what we should hope for), as it really isn't any harder to just install something else. We do not teach him something new here, we point out a mistake.
Your bullshittery is why some people are afraid of even shouting at their kids, how else will they learn that something is fucking bad? Kids don't know any better, you have to punish them for their mistakes, so they won't do that again any time soon. Of course, he isn't a kid, yet such techniques do work on older people as well.
