It's called context, the problem is at least half of the people aren't smart enough to recognize the difference. I still remember the fake outrage over a white women singing a song with nigger in it after the rapper asked her to get on the stage to sing it.
In short, if the word isn't being directed at someone, then it isn't wrong to use it. The only people saying otherwise are either too stupid or are intentionally feigning outrage.
