Trials and hardships are often God getting ones' attention as when things are going swimmingly people tend to not engage with God as much and they certainly do not grow emotionally nor spiritually as much from the good times as the bad.
Also, why do you think God sent us His Only Son to die for us? He is saving us because Satan has sabotaged(in a way) us to a degree and God does love us and is going to give us new bodies that are free of malady and pain.
