Ari Aster is a rare generational talent and a legitimate genius. If you watch Hereditary and Midsommar with an unbiased open mind, he will earn your respect as a master of his craft, even if you don’t personally like the films.
Horror is, of course, a legitimate and serious genre. It is a necessary and important art form because it addresses the darkness of the human mind, the Jungian shadow, our repressed fears, impulses and desires. If that is “trivial” to you, then you may just be a trivial person.
The horror genre is as old as time, from vampire ghost stories to novels like a Dracula and a Frankenstein. You aren’t “smart” for shitting on it, just uncultured.
