I guarantee you that if you started saying prayers to an anime girl your life would improve in exactly the same way you describe with satan. It's the foundation of mysticism, you prime yourself to notice "gifts" from the focus of your devotion. Of course, anything shit that happens to you should also be attributable to it, but that's where human's infinite capacity for self-delusion steps in to inform you that you were just not devoted enough.
Funnily enough, the Africans had a way of dealing with this bullshit hundreds of thousands of years ago: anything or anyone calling itself a god must submit to being eaten. That sorted out the charlatans, the deluded, and the power hungry. Plus it fed the tribe for a weekend.
