it probably coincides with having to do that to stand out, as gay, so that you can attract the interest of other ones because it isn't an immediately visible thing
on the other hand there could easily be a subset of people who enjoy the (often negative lets admit it) attention it garners
there's also the pop media stereotype that people might be emulating of the classic flamer with the lisp
its a multi layered problem but the extent to which it actually is a problem is arguable. histrionics are annoying but that's the whole point they thrive on that
now how this applies to 4chan, particularly /bant/, is that it is a slow board and visibility is at an all time high, and normal people don't use 4chan which has been true since the beginning.
would these people act the same offline as they do online? i don't think so there's a lot of people who flirt with the idea of homosexuality but would otherwise never pursue such a relationship or sexual interaction
so maybe there's a link but maybe it looks worse than it is due to the nature of the beast
