All sources pretty much say that during his years of struggle he only had two suits and trunk full of books, nothing else. He lived in one small room in poor quarter as well, and did so even later, when he could move. He only did when things started to get really hot, and even then, while living in Brown House, he kept bare minimum of belongings.
Check this photo, especially his table. Little to nothing, very neat and orderly. Same applied to his diet and gifts he received - usually handed them to people around.
