We however, will never come across them, and they will not come across us if lightspeed truly is the speed limit of the universe.
Even if we see them, we will never get to contact them, by the time the message (event e) we send out reaches them, it will be tens of thousands of years before it reaches them and another tens of thousands of years before a reply. The society that sent the message will be long forgotten.
It will either be faster than light travel, currently impossible, or nothing at all.
