I have two books here detailing my family tree, on both sides of the family,, going back to the earliest ancestor that arrived in North America.
My mother's people are of British Colonial stock, the first arriving to the Province of Carolina from England in 1690. On the Old Man's side of the family, the first was an Ulster-Scot who immigrated to the young United States in 1799, settling in Bladen Township (now Bladen and Columbus Counties, North Carolina). Around the early to mid 19th Century, there was some Welsh infusion into both sides of the family.
But I do get your point. Beyond a certain date, it does become extremely difficult to trace linage without DNA, if not impossible
