4chan was only able to replace SomethingAwful because it was something new (at least in the West), more accessible and convenient.
Nobody's going to hop over to 124984938519chan simply because it provides better freedom of speech, because 4chan already provides some level of freedom of speech more than most websites and is admittedly more stable, well run and more active than other chans.
