>>11605525you can write anything with just jap characters instead of kanji. this is done a lot as a pronunciation guide since one kanji can be pronounced multiple ways.
for jap characters diacritics differentiate between similar sounds like k/g, s/z, and h/b/p. so こ is ko but ご is go.
in this case if you use jap characters korea is かんこく (kankoku) while prison is かんごく (kangoku)
