It wasn't actually "hunting with the boys to feed your one guaranteed wife", hunter-gatherer societies were harem-competitive (as are all remaining hunter-gatherer societies).
Invention only began because it was motivated by marriage, specifically to keep the family unit in tact and rising above. So you're half-right, beta nerds don't do excess labour for the good of society the way Commies think they will, but neither do they do it for themselves. They DO perform that labour for the family unit, though, which is why we see so many men dropping out of society today where no such unit is enforced in the traditional means.
You're also right that the excess and luxury caused by this labour is to blame for why we abandoned the exact traditions and setup you're pining for, but that's exactly the tragic catch-22 cycle of civilization - start out traditionalist and strong, it works too well, you get soft and give up the traditions, you fall apart and get invaded by barbarians and have to start all over.
