when Jesus said that, he was equating himself with the God that spoke to Moses, aka the Word made flesh. this is rooted in old testament theology. John's work is actually based on the aramaic targums, where instead of LORD like we see in many bible it was WORD. he is much more anthropomorphic in those versions, very intersting. in one of them eve and the serpent have sex and cain is born from the union.
