Stop reading the Bible like a novel from cover to cover. Read the New Testament first starting at Matthew, then cycle back to the Old Testament as a resource, with the New Covenant setting the context. The blood sacrifices were nothing more than a type and shadow of what was to come on the Cross, just as the flood was a type and shadow of baptism, the snake on a pole was a type and shadow of the crucifixion, and so on. Understand the New Testament first, and if you want to dive deeper into the richness of God's dealings with His creation, then it's fine to go back and read bits of the Old Testament. If you start from Genesis and read it like a storybook you'll get burned out and confused fast.
