Yeah it's useful but not that great if you want to make something specific. You can do vector graphics in ps as well so if that's not your main focus you're probably better off switching to that. Vector stuff is good for web design and things that need scaling or frequent readjusting but it doesn't seem very well suited for the stuff you've said you want to do.
