Take ancient Libya for instance. Under the Roman rule, it was fertile, with aqueducts, farmlands, and was the home of wealthy citizens to where it was one of the richest and most prosperous places in the world. Then the Muslims conquered it, and turned it into the barren impoverished and war-torn wasteland that we see today.
