An analogy I use is that the first day of a vacation feels as long as the rest of the trip. When we stimulate our senses and brains with novelty, we take more time to process the experience.
In the other hand, when you live a monotonous life, your brain lacks stimulation and functions on auto-pilot. Think about when you're lost in thought and driving a familiar route, you don't even realize your surroundings until you're home or an unexpected stimulus catches your attention
