The East and the West are cousins. Both are the products of century after century of agrarian culture. While they differ in some ways, in all the important ways they are the same. They share similar senses of time, similar priorities, similar sense of honor and duty, similar capacity for dedication to abstract causes, etc. Especially so when compared to all the people "discovered" during the colonial era, who were definitively not shaped by agriculture and have very different mindsets as a result.
