Molecular biology is a lot of fun and also has real world results, and it also has girls. Almost everyine i know in this field is married, has kids, the whole 9 yards. It is a bit more challenging to navigate though, there are plenty of useless avenues of research which you need to avoid.
Theoretical work doesn't pay well, but if all you want is to sit around at home thinking about interesting shit and you don't mind being a bit on the poorer side, then the field of mathematics or theoretical physics is for you.
There are also fields in between, like biomedical engineering, where you work on designing machines biologists and the medical researchers or industry may use.
