Team leaders can make more than experts in his/her team (although it's nothing carved in stone ofc). The challenge in leading a team is that the leader should not worry about the product, but he/she worries about the people who worry about the product. Team leader still carries the main responsibility of failure, and takes the main glory of the success as well. This is also usually the main gripe of those ones who whine about gender equality and double standards. However they are still often highly unwilling to take the leading post as a project manager in a critical project.
